- Health and Safety: Forms of conduct when going fishing and important points regarding an angler's behaviour when by water.
- Swim Selection & Water Craft: The importance of understanding that finding fish is as important as being able to use the tackle. About habitats and the habits of different species of fish and how that may change throughout the year.
- Tackle requirements: Descriptions and examples of the basic equipment for beginners, through to more technical descriptions and equipment for advanced anglers.
- Setting up: The importance of setting up correctly, in an orderly way, seat box levelling and what is needed for an angling session. Descriptions and demonstrations on how to assemble the tackle, ie: pole, rod, reel, line, etc. Swim selection and how to find the depth of the swim. How to tie different Knots and shotting patterns.
- Bait: The different types of bait used, how to hook/present it, how to feed it and how to store it. Bait options for various species and venues.
- Fishing: Different techniques such as feeding a swim, casting, mending line, recognising bites and setting the hook.
- Hooking, playing & landing fish: Descriptions about the test curve of the rod, breaking strains of line and the correct relationship between main line and hooklength. How much pressure the tackle can take before breakages occur. Demonstrate the correct way to play a fish, including the angle of the ord and how that affects the fish and tackle. The use of a landing net and swinging fish to hand.
- Fish welfare: The importance of handling fish correctly, treating them with respect and care and how to reduce stress to fish being caught. Highlighting the natural protection of the fish, ie: mucus, scales and skin. Demonstrating the correct to handle fish, the removal of hooks and the returning of fish to the water unharmed. The holding of fish in keepnets, carp sacks, pike tunnels, etc. How to weigh fish and photograph them correctly and safely.
